Find a woman named Martha. Don\u2019t trust anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily had laughed at the time. It sounded like something from a movie. Jessie only smiled weakly and kissed her forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPromise me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, she forgot about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the day everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It started on a bright Thursday afternoon. Jessie had been nervous all morning, checking the windows, locking the front door twice, staring at her phone without answering it. Baseball cap. Cold eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily froze instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s him,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The woman moved fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGet down,\u201d she hissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shoved Emily behind the counter just as the man slowly scanned the laundromat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a terrifying moment, nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the man smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCute kid,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cYou seen her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha forced herself to stay calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo idea what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man stared at her for several seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then his eyes drifted toward the back room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toward Emily\u2019s hidden shoes barely visible beneath a laundry cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He started walking forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Martha suddenly pulled a shotgun from beneath the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire laundromat gasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTake one more step,\u201d she said coldly, \u201cand I\u2019ll finish what Jessie started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The man stopped smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, he looked nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because he recognized Martha too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty years earlier, Martha and Jessie had worked undercover together for federal investigators against a violent trafficking network operating across several states.
