Something heavy hung in the air\u2014something waiting to break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the far end, upon the throne carved from black oak, sat the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young, but hardened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His crown rested perfectly upon his head, yet his eyes betrayed a man who had not slept peacefully in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever since his brother died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or rather\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ever since his brother was <em>killed<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth had never been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, suspicion had become a shadow that followed everyone in the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBring her forward,\u201d the King said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doors opened with a deep echo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chains dragged against stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A girl was pushed into the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was young. Barely more than twenty. Her dress was torn, her wrists bruised from iron cuffs\u2014but her posture was straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guards forced her to her knees\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>but she resisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not violently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She simply\u2026 did not kneel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKneel before your king!\u201d one guard barked, shoving her harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the girl remained standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI kneel for no one,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hall froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A ripple of whispers passed through the nobles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The King leaned forward slightly, his expression unreadable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou stand in chains\u2026 and still speak like that?\u201d he asked, his voice low, controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The girl met his gaze without hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou put them on the wrong person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words cut breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The King stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dangerously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou speak treason,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The girl didn\u2019t flinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she replied.<br>\u201cI speak what you already know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The King descended the steps from his throne, each one echoing through the caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026Heard who?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The girl\u2019s voice dropped almost to a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sharp sound echoed\u2014metal hitting stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the guards had dropped his spear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The King\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time\u2026 fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real
