He works on a farm, and I stay home, taking care of the garden and the house. My mother-in-law lives in the city with her younger son — and to be honest, our relationship has never worked out. From the very first day she didn’t accept me. Either that judgmental look, or those sarcastic comments. But I endured it. For my husband. And besides, the distance helped — we saw each other rarely.

But recently she suddenly announced that she wanted to “rest from the city fuss” and came to stay with us for a week. Said she missed us. I knew it wouldn’t lead to anything good, but again — my husband insisted.

From the very first days she began teaching me how to live. Everything was wrong: the soup too salty, the curtains not ironed, and the child (our five-year-old daughter) I was, in her opinion, raising all wrong. She constantly provoked arguments, and at one point she even managed to create a quarrel between me and my husband. I couldn’t take it and cried at night. I just wanted it all to end as soon as possible.

When she finally left, I exhaled. But the very next day something strange began happening.

Our dog, Bucks — the kindest and smartest dog — suddenly began acting aggressively. He was growling at the empty garden, running in circles, then he started scratching the ground near one of the beds, barking, digging with his paws. I tried to pull him away — he wouldn’t listen. He looked at me and continued his strange behavior.

The next day he continued. I couldn’t stand it — I went to get a shovel. My heart was pounding: a dog wouldn’t just dig and growl for no reason. Something was scaring him. I started digging in the spot where he had been barking.

And then the ground collapsed. I froze. From the earth was sticking out…

Continuation in the first comment

From the ground was sticking out… a black bag. Tied shut. With a pounding heart I pulled it out.

Inside — a terrible smell and strange objects: clumps of hair, an old children’s dress (not my daughter’s!), a doll with a broken head, and also — a bundle with photographs on which were me, my husband, and our daughter… with scratched-out eyes.

A cold wave washed over my body. I understood that this was something witchcraft-related, possibly a curse. Who could have done this?

There was only one answer — my mother-in-law. Only she had been in our yard, only she could have dug a hole while I was cooking in the kitchen or spending time with the child.

I didn’t know what to do. I took what I found to the church. The priest said it was “a curse for the destruction of the family.”

I don’t believe in such things, but what happened with our dog, and everything my mother-in-law had been saying and doing in the past days… it all fit into one horrifying picture.

Since then, I forbade her from coming to our house. I told everything to my husband. At first he didn’t believe me, but then he saw the photos and the bag, which I kept as evidence. He stayed silent for a very long time.

And the dog has slept only by the door ever since, as if guarding us.

I don’t know what exactly my mother-in-law wanted to do, but I’m sure of one thing: she will never again cross the threshold of our home.

What do you think, am I dramatizing? Could it be something else?

My husband and I live in a village — quiet, peaceful.
