“I’m sorry, sir,” the doctor said calmly, “but your wife will most likely never wake up. She’s in too much pain. You need to sign the papers so we can turn off the machines.”
The man, barely holding back his tears, looked at his wife.
“Doctor… but maybe there’s still a small chance? Maybe we can wait just a little longer?”
The doctor shook his head.
“It’s pointless. She’s breathing only because of the machines. I understand how much pain you’re in… but believe me, it’s even more painful for her. You have to let her go.”
Those words sounded like a death sentence. He loved her more than anything in the world. Ever since the accident, his life had completely changed. For almost two months he hadn’t left her side — he slept in the hospital, held her hand, talked about their children, their home, and the life waiting for her.
At home, their two sons missed her deeply and asked every day:
“Dad, will Mommy wake up? Will she come back to us?”
And wiping his tears, he would say,
“Of course, boys. We must believe.”
But his faith was fading. And then came the day the doctors made the final decision. The man signed the papers, though his hands were shaking so badly he could hardly hold the pen. The machines were turned off. A soft beep echoed through the room, and the silence that followed was unbearable.
He held her hand tightly, pressed her fingers to his lips, and whispered:
“I will always love you. You are the best wife and mother. Rest now, my love. I’ll tell our children what a wonderful mother they had.”
He leaned down to kiss her forehead… and suddenly froze. His eyes widened in horror. The man noticed something that made his heart stop… Continuation — in the first comment
The woman wasn’t breathing. The monitor showed a flatline — no pulse. Her husband bent closer, his lips trembling as he pressed them to her cold forehead. The machines were silent, and the air was thick with hopelessness.
“This… this can’t be…” whispered one of the doctors.
But it wasn’t an illusion. The impossible had happened. Her fingers twitched slightly. Her eyelids moved. The man froze, unable to believe what he saw.
The doctor rushed to her side, checked her pulse, and then turned to everyone in shock.
“She’s alive!”
The doctors quickly reconnected the medical devices, monitored the readings, and within moments, her pulse returned. Color flushed back into her cheeks, and her breathing became steady.
A few hours later, she finally opened her eyes. Her gaze was weak, but unmistakable—she was looking right at him.
Tears filled the husband’s eyes as he whispered, voice trembling:
“Welcome back, my love.”
